Getting Started with Data Editor

Last updated on 06 Apr, 2026

The Data Editor module provides the ability to edit collision record attributes in a multi-user environment. There is a built-in workflow for editing, reviewing and approving of collision data edits. Users are assigned roles as editors or managers with associated permission levels. The system also provides a historical log of all edits to track and summarize the changes over time.

There are three types of user accounts for the data editor module presented below.

  1. Editor – Allows user to make changes to the collision record data fields.  Once the editor submits the changes to the collision record, the changes are placed in the Pending Edits database for review by the Manager for approval.

  2. Manager – Approves changes made by an editor.  Changes made by an editor are stored in a temporary database and listed in the Pending Edits tab in the User Interface.  The Manager also has editor privileges and can make changes to the collision records.

  3. Superuser – Combines Editor and Manager privileges.  Edits made by the superuser do not need Manager approval and changes are made directly in the collision database.

The Workflow

The normal work flow consists of the editor making user edits and submit to a “pending edits” table for manager review and reject or approve the edits.  If the edited collision record is rejected, the manager can reject the edits and add a commentary that can be viewed by the editor. A Superuser eliminates the pending and review stages to automatically save edits.

* If a change violates a pre-determined flag or auto edit rule, it will be opened for immediate re-editing.

Editor Console: The editor console is pictured below and allows access to flagged collisions (See Flagged Collisions) and Pending Edits tab.

Manager Console: The manager console has the functionality of the editor with the addition of a Pending Reviews tab that lists all the edits that need to be reviewed from editors or other managers. In the example below, the Pending Edits and the Pending Reviews are equal because all the edits were made by this manager.  In most cases where there are multiple editors and managers, the Pending Edits and Pending Reviews total should not be equal. If a two-step review and approval process is not needed, it would be more appropriate to designate the manager as a Superuser.
